02 Jul Lato Green cleaning drive in association with Nairobi City Council organized in Kibera
We pride ourselves in the partnership we had with The Nairobi City Council and the residents of Kibera during the Kibera Cleaning Day on Thursday 25th June 2019. The activity was carried under the Lato Green initiative which aims to send zero waste to the landfill. We are working with partners to achieve a tangible impact on waste in our environment.
The volunteer project was a very good opportunity for us and the City Council to involve the residents in the maintenance of their surroundings. The residents didn’t disappoint as they showed up in large numbers and embraced the activities.
Kibera residents, both women, and men wearing protective clothing such as rubber gloves, reflector jackets, and trash bags, came in high spirits for the social call. The main actions included removing of self-generated landfills, collecting hazardous waste, draining stagnant water, and cleaning the streets making them free from non-biodegradable products, food remains among others.
Collectively, the volunteers gathered many bags of garbage. We appreciate and applaud the City Council for donating the trucks that carried the collected garbage to the dumping site.
We provided the protective clothing to make sure that the volunteers were safe from contracting any diseases as a result of participating in the exercise and generous number packets of Lato Milk as a refreshment after the tedious activities.
We hope that by providing stewardship, mechanisms, and tools to support a clean environment we will influence the public to believe in environmental responsibility just like us.
