03 Aug Lato Green initiates second cleanliness drive in Kibera
In the month of June, we embarked on clean-up exercises to rid the Nairobi city of the filth occasioned by the indiscriminate dumping of solid waste among others. In our second visit to Kibera, we faced great support from the Sub County Officials and residents. Our efforts got a notch higher when a group of volunteers from other community organizations descended on the streets to collect litter, drain stagnant water, clear a dumpsite and carry out sensitization on a cleaner environment.
The volunteers from the first cleanup exercise felt the need for proper sanitation and clean environment hence the effort they took to sensitized their fellow residents to not to throw litter into the open, or drainages or the streets. They also informed other community-based organizations of the clean-up exercises even on the second visit. The county council of Nairobi did not disappoint because as usual trucks came in time to collect the collected garbage and transported the same to the dumpsite.
We were glad to have the opportunity to contribute once again through the provision of protective clothing such as reflector jackets, gloves, mouth masks, gunny bags and milk as a refresher after the exercise.
Our Lato Green initiative is aimed at promoting a healthy environment through ensuring sending zero waste to the landfill hence calling out to the residents to come together and help collect the garbage was a way of attaining our goal. The clean-up exercise comes at a time when the County Government of Nairobi led by Governor Mike Mbuvi, has been given high importance plans to make the city clean and safe.
